The suffix –ion combines with a large number of verbs with Latin roots
(verbs ending in –ate, –ect, –ict, –vent, –hibit, –rupt, –vise, –tribute, –ess and
others) to form nouns.
Notes:
1 If the verb ends in –e, the –e is dropped before the suffix –ion (to educate
–> education, to contribute –> contribution, to supervise –> supervision).
2 In some cases, the suffix –ion takes the following forms:
– -tion (to reduce –> reduction, to convene –> convention)
– -ation (to present –> presentation, to examine –> examination)
– -cation (to apply –> application, to identify –> identification)
3 In some cases, the last consonant in the verb changes when the suffix –
(t)ion is added:
– in verbs that end in –ide/-ode/-ude the –d– changes to –s– before –ion
(to decide –> decision; to erode –> erosion; to conclude –> conclusion,
to recognize –> recognition)
– in verbs that end in –scribe, the –b– changes to –p– before –tion (to
prescribe –> prescription)
